Bios.CV is a non-profit association that promotes research, environmental education and conservation of habitats and species including Loggerhead turtles, Humpback whales and Ospreys. We also promote the involvement and sustainable development of local communities. One of our programs is the monitoring of cetacean species in Cabo Verde waters and recording stranding occurrences in the island. The ongoing monitoring activities are essential to better understand cetacean’s temporal and spatial distribution, population trends, identify potential threats and gather additional information to establish marine protected areas to preserve important breeding and feeding habitats.
Big Blue Foundation (BBF) joined our cetacean monitoring efforts during the springs of 2021 and 2022 and with their support we were able to carry out our first spring expedition to the islands of Maio and São Nicolau and record the first sightings of northern hemisphere Humpback whales in their coastal waters.

We firmly believe that this partnership will strengthen both NGOs goals towards preservation of marine ecosystems, while promoting community-based initiatives. Therefore, we endorse Big Blue Foundation as it will further increase our knowledge, build capacity and maximise our impact. Consequently, contributing to the conservation of Cabo Verde biodiversity.
